HMS TETCOTT - OPERATIONAL HISTORY

Told in full in the book 'Tetcott - the thrill of the chase', here we provide just a brief history of the career of HMS Tetcott, from her adoption by the district of Watchet & Williton, through her service in the Mediterranean, to her decommissioning and dismantling in 1957.

 Warships Week & Watchet & Williton

The War Savings Movement and the adoption of HMS Tetcott by Watchet & Williton during Warships Week 1942.  The village of Tetcott and Tetcott Hunt and its association with the vessel that bore its name.

 Inception & Design

The inception and development of the Hunt Class destroyer and the deficiencies in their design.  Operations and deployment of the class and a list of all Type II class vessels and their eventual fates.

 Commissioning

The build and launch of HMS Tetcott in 1941.  List of Wardroom Officers appointed on commissioning.  Collision with HMS Heartsease on 23 December 1941.  Visit of Officers and ratings to Tetcott village and working-up at Scapa.

The Mediterranean 

Convoys. Operations 'Retribution' and Husky.  The sinking of U-372.  More convoy escorts.  Naples and Southern France.  Malta and victory celebrations.  Return to Portsmouth and orders to proceed to Gibraltar.

Post War

The end of the war in the Pacific. Awaiting refit.  Return to Portsmouth and reduction to Category B Reserve in 1946.  Mothballed at Barrow-in-Furness. Downgrade to hulk status and final dismantling.
